Hands-on Workshop on Common Information Security Tools

DESCRIPTION

    Most faculty members tasked with teaching IT and Information Assurance (IA) topics, design curriculum that provide a firm foundation in the fundamentals of information assurance. Topics covered are mostly in the areas of protection and defending the network infrastructure.

    To establish an effective defense you must have a good understanding of your own vulnerabilities. In addition, you must be aware of the techniques that your adversary might employ to exploit those vulnerabilities. These ideas have direct applicability in the cyber domain.

    This workshop will introduce participants to various Information Assurance tools, such as: nmap, Nessus, hping, Metasploit, Core Impact, Netcat, Ettercap, Hydra, Wireshark, Cain and Abel, and more. The tools explored in this workshop will be used against various systems: PCs/servers, mobile devices, IP phones, etc.


OBJECTIVES

    • Introduce participants to various Information Assurance tools
    • Provide participants with an understanding of information security tools that can be used in teaching offensive techniques
    • Provide hands-on experience to participants

INTENDED AUDIENCE

    Information Security Faculty, Computer and Digital Forensics Faculty, Network and Application Security Specialists.


BIOGRAPHY OF INSTRUCTOR

    Zachariah Tanko is an Assist. Professor, Computer Networking and Information Security, Champlain College, Burlington, VT. Tanko has many years of IT industry and teaching background. He holds a number of Industry recognized certifications in Networking and Security.
